Task 3: Type Design & Communication
In task 3 I will create a font of my own design. I will design: (a e t k g r i y m p n !#,.). Once the font is complete, I will create a basic A4 size poster to display my font.
1.Research
Before designing fonts, we need to conduct research as a reference. After confirming the style we like, we can continue with the next activities. I chose French Script MT and Monotype Corsiva as my reference styles.

Fist we must explore with five different tools. We need to using the tool draw vertical, horizontal, diagonal, circular strokes followed by AOTMX or aotmx; 5 variations of 5 tools totaling 25 styles; 5 selected.
This is my five tools:
1. Staedtler pigment liner 1.2 (round)
2. Artline Decorite (calligraphy)
3.Sharpie permanent marker (fine)
4.Kurecolor (board)
5.Tombow ABT (brush)
This is the vertical, horizontal, diagonal, circular strokes followed by AOTMX I drew with five different tools.
After receiving feedback from Mr. Vinod, I started to explore writing using each tool.
1. Staedtler pigment liner 1.2 (round)
2.Artline Decorite (calligraphy)
3.Sharpie permanent marker (fine)
4.Kurecolor (board)
5.Tombow ABT (brush)
After completing the explore tools, I chose the third font design to carry out my digital exploration. Before deciding which tools to use, I tried all the tools to see which one was more suitable. In the end I decided to use Artline Decorite (calligraphy).
3.Digital exploration
I take this line as my reference.
After that, I tried to digitize the typeface from my sketch using the brush tool or pen tool in Adobe Illustrator. At the beginning, I used pentool first, and Ms. Vinod suggested to me to use brush tool.
After using the brush tool, I also used the pen tool to make some minor changes to the font, such as further extending and bending the tail of the font. I find the pen tool more convenient than the brush tool for controlling curves and angles.
After Mr. Vinod given me feed back I back to Adobe Illustration to redo my typeface.
Here is some progress on fontlab before I done the poster.

FEEDBACK
WEEK 8
General Feedback: This week is independent study week but Mr.Vinod also got give us feedback at online.
Specific Feedback: I didn't submit the work online but in my opinion I think 2 are not suitable for use because they are too thin 3 or 4 are better, I think you need to explore writing it to bring it up to a more appropriate standard before making a decision. You should continue to practice writing in this style now as well.
WEEK 9
General Feedback: This week Ms.Vinod let us show him our exercise one more time.
Specific Feedback: I discussed with Ms.Vinod which is the most suitable among my five creations. My original choice was the third or fourth, but Ms.vinod gave me the opinion of the fifth creation, and finally I listened to it The opinion of Ms.Vinod chose the fifth type design for digitization.
WEEK 10
General Feedback :This week we're going to put the font we designed into fontlab.
Specific Feedback: The feedback Mr.Vinod gave me is my font in ai. It can’t be too handwritten. The proportion of the font should be right and the left and right can’t be the same size. After adjusting these, it can be put into fontlab.
WEEK 11
General Feedback: This week we're going to put the font we designed into fontlab and do some adjustment.
Specific Feedback: The feedback Ms.Vinod gave me this week is not to use pen tool to write my characters. My font is more suitable for brush tool to write. Adjust the brush tool to the appropriate parameters so that it is more similar to my original font
WEEK 12
General Feedback: This week is double check to our digital type design.
Specific Feedback: I didn't attend this class this week because of an urgent matter at home, but through observation, I found that there was a serious problem with my spacing. So I need to adjust the spacing of each letter in fontlab, otherwise the whole font will look ugly.
OBSERVATION:I was confident when I created in the way of handwriting at the beginning, but after I started to use digital fonts for handwriting, there were a lot of problems. Not surprisingly, I was rejected by Mr. Vinod, but this was already in my expectation among. From Mr. Vinod's feedback, I learned about my shortcomings. Through the exercises of other students, I also saw my own shortcomings and what I should learn from others.
FINDINGS: I found that creating a good font is really not as simple as imagined, it is very time-consuming, and it takes a lot of patience and care to create a good font.
And here's an interesting fact: While many people are aware that "uppercase" and "lowercase" refer to capital and small letters, they may not realize that these terms originated from typesetting practices. In the past, when letters were set manually by typesetters, they stored the individual letters in large cases, with one case placed on top of another. To maintain organization, the capital letters were kept in the upper case, while the smaller letters were stored in the lower case. This historical practice gave rise to the terms we commonly use today.

REFLECTION
EXPERIENCE: At first I thought this exercise would be very simple, and I also like the feeling of writing with a pen. But when I first started to make digital, I was a little confused. I felt that the process of making digital was not as simple as I imagined. Especially when adjusting the spacing of each letter is really troublesome. So really creating a new font is really not easy and takes a lot of time.OBSERVATION:I was confident when I created in the way of handwriting at the beginning, but after I started to use digital fonts for handwriting, there were a lot of problems. FURTHER READING
IDENTITYINHG AND SELECTING A FONT
I can more easily decide what size to use when I understand what factors affect readability. The most critical factor is the x-height of the lowercase letters and its relationship to the uppercase and uppercase letters.
After considering the information provided, it becomes apparent that the relationship between uppercase/ascender letters and the x-height is dependent on the design of a particular font. Fonts with a larger x-height, characterized by taller lowercase characters, generally exhibit improved readability when compared to fonts with smaller x-height characters. Another critical factor that sets fonts apart is the depth and shape of descenders, which are letters that extend below the baseline. These factors significantly influence the overall legibility of different fonts. By carefully considering the x-height, as well as the characteristics of descenders, font designers can enhance the readability and visual appeal of their typefaces.
SPECIAL STYLES
Using computers has revolutionized typesetting by allowing the application of numerous special effects to text that would have been prohibitively expensive in the past. However, the downside of this convenience is the widespread misuse, resulting in computer typography that is difficult to read.
One specific area where issues arise is underlining. Unfortunately, most programs mishandle underlining, and users often lack the ability to adjust the settings. Ideally, underlines should be adjusted (lowered) to ensure they do not intersect with any of the characters. There are two styles of underlining: straight, which forms a continuous line beneath the text, and word underline, which affects only the words themselves without including the spaces between them.
Based on the provided information, small caps are recommended for subheads or the first line of a paragraph. However, it is important not to overuse them. Text in all caps is generally more challenging to read and should be reserved for short headlines or subheads. It is not suitable for long sentences or emphasizing text, except in cases like email on the internet where formatting options are limited.
Publishing programs offer various styles for footnotes, references, and mathematical formulas. Typically, users can customize the default settings in these programs to adjust the character size and baseline shift (the vertical movement of the letters) for these elements. This flexibility allows for better control and customization of these specific typographic features.
TEXT SCAILING
It appears that numerous programs provide users with the option to create a pseudo-condensed or pseudo-extended font by horizontally compressing or stretching a font. However, this manipulation results in the distortion of the font's original design. Whenever feasible, it is recommended for users to opt for true condensed or extended fonts, or modify the design in a manner that eliminates the need for the artificial font manipulation. This approach ensures the integrity of the font's intended design and maintains optimal visual quality.
OULINE AND SHADOW
Based on the information provided, it seems that two commonly abused styles in older desktop publishing programs are Outline and Shadow. These styles have been excessively used to the point of being overused and are now recommended to be avoided whenever possible.
