INSTRUCTIONS
TASK 1
We were tasked with forming groups of six to brainstorm a proposal on cultural sensitivity in design. Each group was required to select a country and develop three design sketches that took into account the cultural nuances of that country. Initially, we individually generated one idea each and then shared our concepts within the group.
We have few different topic, that is :
Thailand - Songkran
China - Autumn Fesrival
Brazil - Brazillian Carnival
China - Graden on the Head
Indonesia - Shadow Puppetry
Easther Day
India - Holi
China - Paper Cut
After deliberation, we collectively decided to focus our research on Thailand, aiming to create products tailored specifically for the Thai Songkran Festival.

TASK 2
For this assignment, our objective was to gather data pertaining to the cultural aspects relevant to our theme and research goals. Various methods were available for data collection, and our group opted to conduct an interview with an individual who had previous experience with the Songkran Festival, alongside conducting online research.

TASK 3
In preparation for our concluding assignment, we were tasked with finalizing the designs for our product and bringing them to fruition. Following discussions with our supervisor, we determined to design raincoats and manufacture accompanying buckets. Additionally, we were required to devise a brand name and craft a logo to represent our branding.

FEEDBACK
Week 3: (Data Collection)
- If traveling to Thailand isn't feasible, consider interviewing someone from Thailand to gather insights.
- Expand research efforts by exploring resources like 360 vlogs of Songkran for a more immersive understanding.
Week 4: (Data Collection)
- If locating Thai interviewees proves difficult, consider individuals who have firsthand experience with the festival.
Week 5: (Final Designs)
- Opt for raincoats as the final design, as they are commonly used during the festival and are relatively easier to produce.
- Consider introducing an additional product such as a water bucket, which enhances the festival experience.
- Develop a brand name and logo reflecting elements of Thailand and the Songkran festival.
Week 6: (Final Designs)
- Ensure the final presentation includes a recap of previous tasks, highlighting key research findings and cultural insights.
- Focus on refining the logo and raincoat design, with emphasis on creating a separate version for kids and a more extravagant design for adults.
- Ensure bucket designs include a handle, especially the lotus-themed one, to enhance usability and appeal.
REFLECTIONS
Experience:
Throughout this course, I've delved into the concept of cultural sensitivity in design, with our group specifically focusing on Thai culture. Before this, my understanding of Thai culture was limited. However, through coursework and tasks, I've gained a deeper insight. Task 1 prompted me to propose a design concept focusing on "Cultural Sensitivity in Design," with our group aiming to integrate elements of Thai culture to promote awareness and respect. Task 2 involved extensive data gathering, encompassing visual, oral, textual, and tactile artefacts related to Thai culture, which provided rich inspiration for my design process. In the final task, I used this knowledge to produce visually impactful designs, prioritising simplicity to effectively convey my respect and understanding of Thai culture. Overall, this course has not only expanded my design skills but also deepened my appreciation for diverse cultures, which I believe will greatly enhance my future design endeavours.
Observation:
Over the course of seven weeks in this module, I've had a rich learning experience, particularly delving into Thai culture and the significance of the Songkran festival. Assuming the role of leader throughout the module allowed me to hone my communication and leadership skills. Moreover, I had the opportunity to forge new friendships with peers from diverse backgrounds. The tasks assigned during this module were undoubtedly challenging, especially the initial one where we had to select a country and develop culturally sensitive sketches. Initially, we grappled with understanding the instructions, but through collaborative discussions with groupmates and seeking clarification from our lecturers, we managed to navigate through and complete our assignments. Overall, I found this module to be immensely enjoyable, especially the hands-on experience of producing our final product.
Findings:
Researching Thai culture revealed the profound significance of the Songkran festival, going beyond mere celebration to symbolize renewal and cleansing. Supervisors' feedback proved invaluable in guiding us through tasks. Immersing myself in this research journey sparked a renewed curiosity and appreciation for cultural diversity, emphasizing the importance of cultural sensitivity and empathy in our interconnected world.
