Reflection

During this semester’s "Packaging and Merchandising Design" course, I gained a comprehensive understanding of packaging's critical role in brand promotion and consumer purchasing decisions. The course effectively combined theoretical knowledge with practical application, providing insights into the history, trends, and technological advances in packaging design. Key elements such as color psychology, typography, and visual hierarchy were emphasized, all essential for successful design.

Practical projects allowed me to apply this theoretical knowledge, involving market research, concept development, and final design execution. This hands-on experience was further enriched by collaborating with food science students on a packaging project for Myco Meat, a vegetarian burger patty brand. Their expertise helped us create designs that not only attract consumers but also meet nutritional and preservation requirements.

The course highlighted that packaging is more than a protective shell; it communicates brand messages and influences consumer behavior. Case studies of well-known brands showed how innovative designs and brand storytelling capture target audiences. Design must align with brand values to leave a lasting impression.

Sustainability was a key focus, encouraging the use of eco-friendly materials and processes. I learned the importance of incorporating sustainability elements in response to consumer demand for environmentally friendly products and realized my responsibility as a designer to promote green design.

Collaboration with classmates enhanced my teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills, vital for the interdisciplinary nature of design projects. Feedback and idea exchange improved my designs and laid a solid foundation for my future career.

Through analyzing packaging and creating dielines, I developed skills in translating 2D designs into 3D packaging while maintaining creativity within technical specifications. This course increased my confidence in my design abilities and prepared me for future challenges in the packaging design industry.

Overall, the course equipped me with valuable skills and inspired me to continue innovating, building effective communication bridges between brands and consumers, and exploring the limitless possibilities of design. I look forward to applying this knowledge to future projects.
